Mariah Carey earns No. 1
As previously predicted, the new album by Mariah Carey has reached record highs in sales, topping the U.S. pop charts.
This is her 6th album to top the aclaimed pop chart, tying her with other female vocal legends including Madonna and Janet Jackson with 6 number 1 chart toppers. Barbra Streisand has 8 top sellers.
“E=MC2″ sold more than 462900 copies in its first week marking the best ever sales week for Carey.
As far as best week sales for the year goes, Carey even surpassed the previous leader Jack Johnson, whose Sleep Through The Static album sold 375000 copies during its first week.
Carey’s last album, “The Emancipation of Mimi,” also landed at No. 1 in its premiere week, moving 404,000. She is now tied with Madonna and Janet Jackson for the second most No. 1 albums among female artists. Only queen bee Barbra Streisand, with eight, is ahead of the pack. There’s a good chance Madonna will add another No. 1 to her tally though, as her “Hard Candy” album drops next Tuesday.
Leona Lewis’s album “Spirit” which led sales last week, slipped to number 2, while “Hanna Montana/Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concert” landed in the third spot.
